Description
This print is perfect for any astronomy lover. Featured are the constellations, Andromeda (The Chained Maiden) and Triangulum (The Triangle). Both constellations belong to the Perseus family of constellations along with Auriga, Cassiopeia, Cepheus, Cetus, Lacerta, Pegasus, and Perseus.
The Andromeda constellation was named after the mythical princess with the same name, who also wife to the Greek hero Perseus. In Greek mythology, Queen Cassiopeia, offended the Nereids by claiming she was more beautiful than they were which caused them to complain to the sea god Poseidon. As punishment for Queen Cassiopeia's boastfulness, Poseidon sent Cetus, the sea monster, to flood and destroy King Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia's lands. When the king sought advice from the Oracle of Ammon on how to prevent complete destruction of his lands, he was told that the only way to appease the gods and nymphs was to sacrifice his daughter, Andromeda, to Cetus. Subsequently, Andromeda was chained to a rock and would have been left to the monster if Perseus had not come along and saved her.
